Bengaluru: A suspected explosion in Wilson Garden’s Chinnayanapalya, Bengaluru, claimed the life of an 8-year-old boy and left several others injured on Thursday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Mubarak (8), while the injured include Kasturamma (35), Sarasamma (50), Shabreena Banu (35), Subramani (62), Sheikh Najeedulla (37), Fatima (8) and Kayal (8). Many of the injured have been shifted to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital and Jayanagar Hospital, with one child receiving treatment at the Victoria Hospital burns ward.
Police said the blast occurred inside the house of Kasturamma, whose daughter Kayal was also injured. Mubarak, who lived in the adjacent house, was killed in the incident. The intensity of the explosion caused the collapse of walls and roofing on the first floor and damaged more than eight nearby houses.
Adugodi police visited the scene and suspect a cylinder blast as the possible cause, though locals believe it could be something more powerful due to the magnitude of the explosion. “The sound was deafening, and some people sustained serious head and hand injuries,” a resident said.
Many in the area work as gardeners at Lalbagh Botanical Garden and had left for work earlier in the day. Residents said the casualty count could have been higher if more people had been home.
The blast has left the local community in fear. Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation into the cause of the explosion.
