Bengaluru: A tragic incident unfolded in Ashrayanagar under the RMC Yard police limits, where two workers who entered a sewer for cleaning inhaled toxic gases, resulting in the death of one labourer and hospitalisation of another.
The deceased has been identified as Puttaswamy (32), while his colleague Anthony was rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition.
The incident occurred around 7 PM on Sunday, July 20, near the Indira Canteen in Ashrayanagar, where both men descended into a manhole for sewer cleaning. Shortly after entering, Puttaswamy complained of breathlessness and exited the sewer. He was reportedly given buttermilk and sent home. However, according to Bengaluru North Division DCP Baba Saheb Nemagouda, he was found dead the next morning at his residence.
The RMC Yard Police visited the spot and initiated an investigation. Locals have alleged that the duo may have been lured with monetary incentives to undertake the hazardous task, prompting further inquiry.
The body has been sent for post-mortem, and the police have yet to receive a formal complaint. “Once a complaint is filed, legal action will be initiated. Manual scavenging is banned, and if any violation is found, we will gather evidence and act against those responsible,” said DCP Nemagouda.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers of manual scavenging and the urgent need for enforcing labour safety norms.
