Programme on World Elephant Day, Aug 12, will help Bengalureans appreciate the need for elephant conservation
BENGALURU:
World Elephant Day is celebrated on August 12 to create awareness about this endangered species. Bannerghatta Biological Park (BBP) houses Asian Elephants and the tuskers are taken care by Jenu Kuruba mahouts and kavadigas.
As part of the celebrations, BBP is introducing a new programme to involve citizens and wildlife enthusiasts to offer their services to the zoo in the form of ‘fodder harvesting’ (‘Mrugalayakke Shramadhana’). The harvested fodder will be fed to the elephants by the mahouts.
Prior enrollment
Interested people can enroll in pairs for the activity which will be conducted from 12.30 pm to 2 pm on August 12. The programme will be conducted on a weekly basis and prior enrollment is required by filling out the Google form mentioned in the website http://www.bannerghattabiologicalpark.com. A maximum of 20 people can participate.
Further, the elephants will be provided enrichment and elephant staff will educate visitors on elephant facts and the need for their conservation so as to make citizens ‘Friends of Elephants’. All the activities will be conducted under the supervision of field staff and will commence with the ‘wildlife/zoo pledge’.
