Bengaluru: In a proactive move ahead of the pre-monsoon and monsoon season, city authorities have initiated a series of preparedness measures, including exploring the installation of mist spray systems at major traffic signals to reduce heat stress for pedestrians.

The directions were issued following a high-level meeting held on April 10, 2026, under the chairmanship of the Additional Chief Secretary, Urban Development Department. Acting on these instructions, FECC Special Commissioner Sushma Godbole directed officials across the Greater Bengaluru Area (GBA) to conduct mock drills at the municipal level through rapid response teams to handle possible rain and flood-related emergencies.

Highlighting the need for inter-departmental coordination during extreme weather events, officials stressed that preparedness through simulation exercises is critical for effective response during heavy rains and flooding situations.

Mist Spray System Under Consideration
As part of heat mitigation efforts, authorities have been asked to examine the feasibility of installing mist spray systems at key and long-duration traffic signals across the city. The initiative aims to provide relief to pedestrians and commuters exposed to high temperatures during peak hours.

Real-Time Rainfall Information via ‘Varunamitra’
To keep citizens informed, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC) has made detailed rainfall and flood forecasts available through its portal Varunamitra. The platform provides ward-level maps, rainfall predictions, and flood alerts to help authorities and residents prepare in advance.

Strengthening Emergency Response
Officials have been instructed to prepare lists of rapid response teams in each municipal corporation to handle incidents such as fallen trees and debris clearance. The Forest Department has been asked to identify and report such teams at the earliest.

Additionally, suitable locations must be identified for the temporary storage of hazardous tree branches and debris removed during storms.

Mobilising Volunteers and Medical Support
Authorities have also been directed to identify and enlist NSS, NCC volunteers, self-help groups, and local doctors willing to assist during emergencies. A comprehensive list is to be prepared and submitted by the end of the month.

Hospital Mapping and Flood Action Plans
To ensure timely medical assistance during emergencies, region-wise mapping of hospitals is being undertaken. Meanwhile, all five city corporations have been asked to prepare comprehensive flood management action plans, including both temporary and permanent solutions, and submit reports by April 30, 2026.

The administration has emphasised coordinated action involving multiple agencies, including BESCOM, BWSSB, traffic police, civic bodies, and volunteers, to ensure the city remains prepared for any emergency situation during the upcoming monsoon season.
