10-Minute Response Saves Two Minors: Bengaluru Police Halt Illegal Marriage
Bengaluru: Swift intervention by the Bengaluru City Police successfully prevented the marriage of two minors in the Kodichikkanahalli area on Thursday, highlighting the effectiveness of the city’s emergency response and child protection mechanisms.
The incident came to light on January 22, when an alert citizen noticed preparations for a suspected child marriage and immediately contacted the police through the Namma 112 emergency helpline. Acting on the tip-off, control room personnel promptly alerted the Hoysala-209 patrol unit.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Suresh and Head Constable Umesh Nagannavar reached the venue within 10 minutes and halted the ceremony. Upon verification, the police found that the couple involved were a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old boy, both legally ineligible for marriage.
The police team conducted an on-the-spot counselling session for the parents and family members, clearly explaining the provisions and legal consequences under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. After being informed of the potential legal action, the families agreed to immediately call off the marriage.
Police officials said the operation was carried out under the city’s ‘Safe City’ initiative and underscored how timely public reporting, coupled with a rapid police response, can effectively prevent illegal and harmful practices such as child marriage.
Authorities have once again urged citizens to remain vigilant and report such incidents without hesitation, assuring prompt action through the Namma 112 emergency system.
