Mysuru/Bengaluru: Karnataka is set to receive a major boost in rail infrastructure with the introduction of Vande Bharat sleeper coaches expected soon, Minister of State for Railways V. Somanna announced, while highlighting ongoing large-scale investments across the Bengaluru–Mysuru corridor.

Speaking after a window trailing inspection of the Bengaluru–Mysuru railway section, Somanna said Vande Bharat trains are already operating across multiple districts, and sleeper coach variants are likely to be introduced within March–April, further strengthening long-distance connectivity in the state. He indicated that one or two such trains could be allocated to Karnataka as part of the Centre’s expansion plan.

The Minister underscored that the Bengaluru–Mysuru stretch is being developed as a high-priority corridor, with projects worth thousands of crores underway. “Bengaluru and Mysuru are like two sides of the same coin. The scale of development across this stretch reflects that vision,” he said.

Somanna detailed multiple infrastructure upgrades, including ₹484 crore works in Bengaluru, ₹493 crore projects in Mysuru, and ₹32 crore redevelopment at Ashokapuram station, which has already been completed and dedicated to the public. Several MEMU train operations have also been shifted to the upgraded facility.

Across the corridor, station modernization and infrastructure works are progressing at key locations including Kengeri (₹21 crore), Krishnarajapuram (₹21 crore), Mandya (₹20 crore), Channapatna (₹21 crore), and Ramanagara (₹21 crore). Additional works are underway in Shravanabelagola and surrounding sections.

Highlighting safety upgrades, the Minister said the indigenous ‘Kavach’ system is being deployed across 1,568 km of railway routes to enhance passenger safety. He also emphasized improved accessibility features, including escalators and facilities for differently-abled passengers under the Amrit Bharat station redevelopment initiative.

Somanna pointed out that Karnataka is witnessing railway development works worth nearly ₹52,000 crore, along with significant land acquisition progress of over 3,270 acres. However, he expressed concern over delays in certain projects due to land acquisition challenges and lack of coordination.

He also flagged pending projects such as the Chamarajanagar–Bengaluru line and Mysuru–Kushalnagar connectivity, urging faster clearances and cooperation to ensure timely execution.

Reiterating the Centre’s commitment, Somanna said funding support will be extended for critical infrastructure like road overbridges and underpasses, ensuring that such projects are not stalled due to state-level constraints.

The announcement of Vande Bharat sleeper coaches is expected to significantly enhance travel comfort and efficiency, marking the next phase of railway modernization in Karnataka.
