Golden Orb Weaver females burrow in the ground to lay thousands of spiderlings
BENGALURU:
The Bannerghatta Butterfly Park has a unique resident that multiplies exponentially!
The Golden Orb Weaver (Nephila Pilipes), as its name suggests, has a unique golden-coloured web . Females can lay anywhere from 300 to 3,000 eggs by burrowing in the ground or within webs to protect the eggs from predators such as ants.
These orb-weaving spiders use vibrations as a mode of communication. Sometimes they mimic the vibrations of other insects by making sounds from their abdomens so as to catch bigger prey like birds, bats and bigger insects .
