Swachh Bharat Mission Director Assesses Solid Waste Management in BBMP Limits

Date:

BENGALURU: Mr. Binay Jha, Director of Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) [SBM(U)]-2.0, from the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, visited the BSWML office today to gain a comprehensive understanding of solid waste management in the city.

During his visit, Mr. Jha received a detailed demonstration on the current solid waste management practices within the BBMP limits, as well as the measures being implemented and future plans in place.

Bengaluru currently generates a staggering 6,500 metric tons of waste daily. The city has implemented a system of collecting wet, dry, and sanitary waste separately using auto tippers that go door-to-door. These auto tippers and compactors are equipped with RFID technology, allowing marshals to track their movements and ensure proper waste disposal. Marshals will also be monitoring and penalizing individuals who litter on the streets, with night patrols in place to catch offenders.

Mr. Jha emphasized the importance of educating the public on the proper disposal of waste and encouraging them to utilize the designated auto tippers for waste collection.

Furthermore, plans were discussed regarding the establishment of an integrated command control center to oversee solid waste management activities and the development of software for monitoring garbage disposal.

As part of his visit, Mr. Jha also toured the landfill and KCDC treatment units to gain insight into the corporation’s efforts towards effective solid waste management, aligning with the goals of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

During his visit to the landfill, he observed the scientifically managed mixed waste disposal system and provided valuable suggestions for improvement. He recommended implementing more result-based information, education, and communication strategies to the public. This would help reduce the amount of mixed waste being disposed of at the landfill and increase waste segregation at the source.

Furthermore, he also toured the treatment unit under construction by M. Mukka Proteins Limited. This cutting-edge facility, constructed with international technology at a cost of approximately Rs. 150 crores, is designed to meet the city’s waste management needs.

Recognizing the significance of a treatment plant with a capacity of 1,000 MT, Bangalore city officials expressed their support for the private company’s waste management initiative. They emphasized the potential impact of this project on the city and its contribution to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

He stressed the importance of submitting a proposal for the treatment plant to the National Steering Committee of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Approval of M. Mukka Proteins Limited’s technology would establish a precedent for other municipal corporations in the state and country to emulate.

BSWML CEO Dr. K Harish Kumar Chief Operations Officer Ramamani, Chief General Manager M Lokesh, and other officials were present during these visits, highlighting the collaborative effort to enhance waste management practices in the region.
