Schoolgirls Fall from Moving Bus in Karnataka’s Belthangady; CCTV Captures Shocking Incident
Bengaluru: In a shocking incident highlighting serious safety concerns in public transport, two schoolgirls were injured after falling from a moving bus near Gerukatte on the Belthangady–Uppinangady route in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district.
The accident occurred when the bus was negotiating a turn on Reshme Road. According to reports, the rear door of the moving bus suddenly opened, causing the two students, who were standing near the entrance, to be thrown out onto the road. The entire incident was captured on CCTV, showing the bus in motion before the door swings open and the girls fall within seconds.
Locals rushed to the spot immediately after the incident and shifted the injured students to a nearby hospital. Both victims sustained injuries but are reported to be out of danger.
Preliminary information suggests that the bus was overcrowded, forcing several passengers, including students, to stand near the entrance. The situation worsened when the door, allegedly not properly secured, opened during the turn.
Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into possible negligence by the driver and the condition of the vehicle. Officials are also examining whether the safety mechanisms of the bus, particularly the door-lock system, were functioning properly.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the condition of government buses operating in rural parts of Karnataka, where limited public transport options force heavy dependence on such services. Residents have alleged that many buses in the region are old and poorly maintained, increasing the risk of such accidents.
Authorities are expected to take strict action following the probe, while calls for improved safety standards and better maintenance of public transport vehicles continue to grow.
