Covid claims 15 across Karnataka, spares Bengaluru

City’s 1.46%, state’s 1.58% death rates ‘better than elsewhere’: Minister

BENGALURU:

Things have gotten so bad for Bengaluru on the corona front that it was considered a ‘relief’ of sorts when the state capital did not cross the 1,000-infection mark on Tuesday! However, the day’s count of 800 fresh patients was still a huge chunk of the overall 1,498 cases in Karnataka.

As per Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar, the state reported 15 deaths in the last 24 hours. Bengaluru, however, was spared on this front with not a single death on Tuesday.

The minister said, “The number of infected people in the state has increased to 26,815. So far, a total of 416 victims have died.”

Claiming that the city and the state were ‘better off’ in this respect than the rest of the world, he said, “Globally, the death rate is 4.6% while the national mortality rate is 2.79%. Bengaluru’s mortality rate is 1.46% while Karnataka’s mortality rate is 1.58 %. We are working to bring this down to below 1%.”

Sudhakar added, “There are 16,385 active cases out of which 1% are in the ICU — only this percentage of people requires intensive care.”
