Omicron: No cause for public panic, but follow Covid protocol: Karnataka Health Minister Sudhakar

Two Covid-positive samples whose results were sent to the Centre from Karnataka have been announced as positive for the Omicron variant, Karnataka Minister of Health and Medical Education Dr K Sudhakar informed reporters on Thursday.

The Minister said the Omicron variant could be detected very quickly thanks to the fast-track testing system in Karnataka. On November 20, a sample of a passenger who arrived from South Africa was tested and found positive for the variant. He was staying at a Bengaluru hotel, and was asymptomatic when he tested positive. Tested again in a private lab on November 23, he got a negative report. His 24 primary and 240 secondary contacts have been traced. identified and tested, and none has been found Covid-positive, Dr Sudhakar said.

Doctor’s case

The Omicron variant was also found in a 46-year-old doctor, who tested positive and self-isolated the same day. His viral load was high but he had no travel history. Out of his primary and secondary contacts examined, 5 have reported positive. “A total of six people were admitted to a government hospital, and we are keeping a close watch on them. No one has reported any serious problems,” the Minister said.

He urged people to not get anxious but follow Covid safety measures. “The Chief Minister will discuss the issue soon after arriving from Delhi and necessary steps will be taken to contain the spread of the virus,” he said, He has also requested people not to spread rumours.
