BENGALURU:

Taking further steps toward the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) elections, the state government has formally designated the number of wards in Bengaluru as 225. Moreover, it has issued a draft ward delimitation, solidifying the announcement. The Congress government made this official through a notification released on Friday night, establishing that BBMP will now consist of 225 wards.

In the past few days, the government had announced that the BBMP elections are scheduled for December 2023.

On August 4, 2023, the Government promptly revoked the previously issued January 29, 2021 notification, which had determined the number of Councilors for Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike as 243. In exercise of the powers conferred under sub-section (3)(a) of section 7 of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Act, 2020, the number of Councilors for BBMP was immediately adjusted to 225.

The notification states, “The Chairman of the Committee for Delimitation of Wards and the Chief Commissioner of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, based on the Census 2011 and through a letter dated August 14, 2023, determined the draft for delimitation of wards in accordance with section 7 of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Act, 2020. Individuals or institutions wishing to submit objections or suggestions must provide written submissions, complete with their signature and full address, along with comprehensive reasons and explanations for their objections. These should be addressed to the Additional Chief Secretary to the Government, Department of Urban Development, Room No. 436, 4th Floor, Vikasa Soudha, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Veedhi, Bengaluru-560001, within 15 days from the issuance date of the notification in the Extraordinary Gazette of Government. Any objections or suggestions received after this stipulated time will not be considered.”
