Bengaluru: In a groundbreaking move, Namma Metro facilitated Bengaluru’s first-ever human organ transport via metro rail, marking only the second such initiative in India. The swift operation enabled the transportation of a donated human liver from Vydehi Hospital in Whitefield to Sparsh Hospital near Rajarajeshwarinagar for a life-saving transplant.
At 8:38 PM on Friday, August 1, a specially-equipped ambulance carrying the liver, accompanied by a doctor and seven medical personnel, reached Whitefield Metro Station. There, an Assistant Security Officer (ASO) and Metro staff facilitated rapid documentation and security clearance.

By 8:42 PM, the liver was aboard a Namma Metro train, reaching Rajarajeshwarinagar Metro Station by 9:48 PM, where another ASO and metro team ensured a smooth transfer to a waiting ambulance. The liver was successfully delivered to Sparsh Hospital in time for the critical transplant surgery.
The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) coordinated the operation under the guidelines of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) and its Joint Procedure Order (JPO) for medical emergencies.
Medical professionals praised the Metro staff, Home Guards, and ASOs for their coordination and commitment. This successful organ transfer underscores the emerging role of urban transport systems like Namma Metro in emergency healthcare logistics.
