BBMP warns public of police action for misbehaviour with staff; Twitterati condemn incident

BENGALURU:

In an incident which has drawn much flak from officials and twitterati alike, a woman biker who was penalised for not covering her face threw the penalty amount in a fit of anger at BBMP marshals on Wednesday morning. That apart, she engaged in a heated argument on the issue with the marshals.

The incident took place at Govindraj Nagar in the West Zone, when BBMP marshals on Covid duty were stopping bikers sans masks/face coverings.

In response, BBMP has warned that police complaints will be filed if people are found misbehaving with officers on duty.

IAS officer and BBMP Special Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) D Randeep warned of strict action against such behaviour. He tweeted, “BBMP marshals are duty- bound to enforce (wearing of) masks and social distancing norms as per govt order. Please do not throw money, abuse or misbehave with them as it will attract additional action from @BlrCityPolice.”

Randeep also posted a video of the woman who had allegedly misbehaved with the marshal and another picture of the ‘thrown’ penal amount lying on the road.

‘Learn to respect staff’

NGO ‘Caring India’ tweeted in Kannada, “We must learn humanity and not arrogance.
Marshals are doing their job, and let’s do ours by covering our face. God will decide who will die due to corona and not you, madam, and hence follow rules instead cursing duty-bound officials.”

Former government-nominated corporator Clement Jayakumar responded, “Really shocking and shameful behaviour. @CPBlr – Plz arrest this lady as per Disaster Management rules — obstructing Government officers in executing their work.”

Another twitteratis, Mahesh N, said, “Very bad behaviour, kudos to patient response by marshal. Imposing fines are the best way to bring in change in our country. Hope it is even more strictly implemented.”

Significantly, veteran leader B.S. Yediyurappa — who had limited his appearances at the BJP office to core committee meetings — was seen at the party headquarters for two consecutive days. Sources suggest that Shah, during his closed-door interactions, advised the Lingayat strongman to become more active in state affairs and guide the party from the front.
