Date:

UDUPI: A businessman committed suicide by first consuming poison inside his car and then shooting himself dead at Nitte Doopadakatte in Karkala taluk on Tuesday morning. The deceased was identified as Dilip N R, who hailed from Karkala and was a resident of Mangaluru.

Dilip set out from home on Monday night saying he would be proceeding to Karkala. However, he stopped his car by the side of the road near Doopadakatte in front of the gates of Navodaya Properties. He then consumed poison and shot himself with his firearm, police said.

Udupi SP Dr Arun Kumar said a case of unnatural death has been registered. “Prima facie, Dilip seems to have suffered financial losses and the family said he was having kidney issues. Before ending his life, he had sent a message on WhatsApp saying that he would be committing suicide. The family members had informed the police on Monday night itself and a search was launched. Dilip had shot himself in the chest and the police found an empty bottle of poison and a licenced revolver in the car”, he added.

Dilip was the brother of Karkala municipal council member Subheet N R. The body was shifted to the KMC hospital in Manipal for post-mortem examination. The Karkala Rural police visited the spot and have registered a case. Further investigation is under way.
