Revenue Minister Ashoka, Chief Secy Ravi Kumar stress continuation of Covid curbs
BENGALURU:
Amid the third wave of the coronavirus, which has seen a continuing rise in daily Covid-19 cases in Karnataka, the state government plans to take a call on Friday, January 21 on whether to retain or scrap the ongoing weekend curfew.
The decision was arrived at during a virtual meeting chaired by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday. As of now, Covid restrictions, including the night and weekend curfews, are in place across the state till January 31.

Ashwath Narayan for scrapping curfew
During the meeting, Higher Education Minister Dr CN Ashwath Narayan batted for scrapping the weekend curfew, while Technical Advisory Committee members and Chief Secretary P Ravi Kumar sought continuation of the Covid restrictions for another week.
“Let the Covid restrictions continue for another one week. Experts claim that the Covid surge may come down in the last week of January. We could take a call on the weekend curfew after considering all these on the coming Friday,” the Chief Secretary reportedly told the Chief Minister during the meeting.

“The media has been focusing on the weekend curfew. We have decided to take a final call on the necessity of the weekend curfew on the coming Friday,” said Revenue Minister R Ashoka after the meeting.
Ashoka noted that the government cannot lift restrictions just to provide business to a few hotels. “Should the government take the blame for allowing a few businesses to work? What if Covid numbers see a peak?” Ashoka said.

Hoteliers to meet CM
Meanwhile, the Bengaluru Hoteliers Association has decided to meet the Chief Minister to demand scrapping of the weekend curfew. A delegation under the leadership of association president PC Rao has sought implementation of the ‘Maharashtra model’ pertaining to Covid restrictions in Karnataka.
