Ahead of likely 3rd wave in Karnataka, govt medical colleges on alert & paediatric wards ramped up: Health Minister

BENGALURU:

Indicative of the seriousness with which the state government is taking the emergence of the Omicron variant and the possibility of a third Covid wave, a new set of precautions is being taken, including a month’s training for 18,000 nurses, ramping up paediatric ICUs, and putting medical colleges across the state in a state of ‘combat readiness’.

Following a videocon with directors of medical colleges on Friday, Health Minister K Sudhakar told reporters that there are 21 medical colleges at the district level and all their staff, including the HoD, professors and senior doctors, have been asked to be prepared for a surge in cases, and to take the help of resident doctors and final-year medical students.

During the first and second Covid waves, the state faced a shortage of ICU nurses, Currently, there are 18,000 final-year nurses and paramedics who will be given a month’s training with the assistance of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and other institutions, the Minister said.

Docs’ salaries

Officials have been instructed to keep paediatric wards fully equipped. Resident doctors’ Covid risk allowance to the tune of Rs 55 crore has been released by the Finance Department. From December onwards, salaries will be directly credited to the doctors’ bank accounts, Sudhakar said. .

As per the advice of the expert panel, a special ICU and ward will be provided for Omicron-infected persons, while those who are infected with the Delta variant will be treated in a separate ward, the Minister said.

Efforts are underway to trace 57 passengers who arrived in the state from Africa, the Minister said.
