Karnataka Government Reconstituted BBMP Ward Delimitation Commission headed by Chief Commissioner

Government has reconstituted a commission headed by Chief Commissioner for redo of ward delimitation of BBMP wards. The court has directed governmentto submit the report within the three months.

BBMP Chief Commissioner is the Chairman of the Commission, BDA Commissioner, Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner is the member and Special Commissioner of BBMP’s Revenue Department is the Member Secretary of the commission.

On June 19, 2023, the High Court had given 12 weeks’ time to redo delimitation of the wards in BBMP limits.

Background: On January 29, 2021, ‘BBMP Wards delimitation Commission’ was constituted for the re-delimitation of BBMP wards. The commission submitted its report on June 6, 2022. Based on this, a notification was issued on July 14, 2022, finalizing the delimitation of the wards based on the 2011 census.

The petition challenging this notification was dismissed by the High Court on September 16, 2022. Against the order given by the High Court, B.N. Manjunath Reddy (former congress mayor) and others had filed an application before the Division Bench of the High Court. During its hearing on June 19, 2023, the High Court granted 12 weeks time for re-allocation of wards.

On June 23, the government has reconstituted the ‘BBMP Wards Redistricting Commission’ which was formed earlier for the redistricting of the wards as per the order given by the High Court.
