Bengaluru: Following a cabinet decision, the Karnataka government announced on Friday the official renaming of Ramanagara district to Bengaluru South district.
According to the notification, “In accordance with Section 4(4A) of the Karnataka Land Revenue Act of 1964, the name of Ramanagara District has been changed to Bengaluru South District, with Ramanagara designated as the District Headquarters.”
Located approximately 50 kilometers from Bengaluru, Ramanagara will continue to serve as the headquarters for the newly renamed district, which will also encompass the taluks of Magadi, Kanakapura, Channapatna, and Harohalli.
Ramanagara is notably the home district of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who also serves as the state Congress president. He represents the Kanakapura Assembly constituency within the district and was the initial proponent of the proposal to rename the district to Bengaluru South.
