Yediyurappa says it is ‘not appropriate’ to change long-standing Kannada names of the Kasargod, Manjeshwar villages
BENGALURU:
In the wake of the controversy over a reported move to change the Kannada names of villages in Kasargod and Manjeshwar in Kerala, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has said he will write to his Kerala counterpart requesting him to retain the existing Kannada names of the villages in the border districts.
The CM gave this assurance to Dr C Somashekar, Chairman, Karnataka Border Development Authority, on Monday.
@CMOKerala pic.twitter.com/qOg9p7Mwco

‘Blow to harmony’
Yediyurappa said he would request the Kerala CM to immediately stop the process of changing the names of the villages. Kannadigas and Malayalis in Kasargod and Manjeshwar have been living in harmony for decades and it is not appropriate to change the Kannada names of villages that have their own cultural and historical significance, he said.
The Karnataka Border Development Authority Chairman felt local organizations in the neighbouring state may have attempted to change the villages’ names without bringing the issue to the notice of the Kerala government.
