BBMP chief justifies order on gyms in parks as a matter of Covid-related precaution
BENGALURU:
On the very first day of Bengaluru’s ‘unlocking’ on Monday, BBMP has decided not to allow public use of any exercise-related equipment inside civic parks till further orders. There are more than 1,200 parks in Bengaluru.
In a one-page advisory, BBMP Chief Commissioner Gaurav Gupta, expressing concern over public health, noted, “BBMP understands that the closing of gyms and common exercise facilities has caused a lot of inconvenience. As a citizen of Bengaluru, you should understand that this closure is temporary and time-bound due to the outbreak of Covid-19.”
Gupta added, “All the equipment for exercise inside parks have been closed till further orders. Kindly cooperate.”

‘Walk, don’t congregate’
He also suggested that citizens refrain from gathering in parks or open green/recreational/exercising spaces.
Stressing the need for social distancing in parks, Gupta added, “Maintaining a healthy exercise routine is essential. Make use of home-based exercises available on smartphones, internet and television, and restrict engagement of children in group play in children areas or other areas in parks and green spaces.”
