BBP appeals to citizens to sponsor daily feeding costs of inmates; tax rebate for donations

BENGALURU:

Bannerghatta Biological Park has appealed to the heart-strings and purse-strings of citizens in contributing towards the feeding cost of the zoo’s residents. The park houses 2,388 animals belonging to 102 species.

As per the BBP, the daily feeding cost for individual animals is:

Asian Elephant — Rs 3,000
Royal Bengal Tiger — Rs 1,500
Lion — Rs 1,500
Leopard – Rs 500
Giraffe – Rs 1000
Zebra – Rs 750
Hyena/Wolf – Rs 500
Jackal/Wild Dog – Rs 400
Hippo – Rs 1200
Sloth Bear – Rs 600
Himalayan Black Bear – Rs 600

For the other inmates it is:

Deer (approximately 120, including spotted deer, hog deer, barking deer, thamin deer, black buck and nilgai) – Rs 5,000

Herbivores (approximately 1,250, including spotted deer, sambar deer, hog deer, black buck, nilgai and gaur) – Rs 70,000

Upon receipt of the donor details, a certificate and a receipt to acknowledge the contribution will be issued. There is a provision for IT rebate under 80G for animal adoption/donation. Exemptions u/s 80G (5) (iv) of the Income Tax Act, 1961 is granted to the Zoo Authority of Karnataka, which is valid from AY 2011-12 and onwards vide Commissioner of Income Tax, Mysore letter No. 2-1/80G/CIT/Mys/2010-11.
