BBMP Election: Karnataka High Court grants 12 weeks time to reset ward delimitation

BENGALURU:

The Bruaht Bengaluru Mahanagara Palika (BBMP) elections have been further delayed as the state government has been granted 12 weeks’ time by the Karnataka High Court to reset the ward delimitation.

The Karnataka government has informed the division bench of the High Court that there are many loopholes in the current ward redistribution and has sought time from the court against this backdrop.

The High Court agreed to this and gave the government 12 weeks time to redraw the boundaries of 243 wards.

The previous BJP government had issued a government order regarding the BBMP delimitation and it was challenged in the High Court. Congress leaders had argued that delimitation was ‘unscientific’. A single member bench of the High Court heard the petition and rejected the petition.

Dissatisfied with this order, former Bangalore mayor Manjunath Reddy approached the division bench challenging the order of the single bench. The Karnataka High Court has also asked the government to restore ward reservation.

After the Congress came to power in the state, a committee was formed under the leadership of Transport Minister Ramalingareddy to review the division of wards and the report was submitted to Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President DK Shivakumar. Since September 2020 BBMP has remained without an elected council.
