Anti-conversion law is will of majority people: Karnataka CM

HUBBALLI:

Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday said anti-conversion law is will of the majority people and state government is determined to bring a draft bill in the winter session of the Assembly after getting a nod at the cabinet meeting to be held in Belagavi.

“This is not a recent development, this is a continuous discussion from the days of Indian Independence. These discussions now have materialized into anti-conversion laws that are enforced in various parts of the country.

Majority of the people are expressing concerns over forcible conversions through inducements. It is the will of the majority people of Karnataka to have an anti-conversion law,” he told reporters here.

The winter session commences in Belagavi from tomorrow.

The state government is bringing the proposed law to avoid disturbance in the society, Bommai said. “One thing I would like to make very clear. Forcible religious conversion by way of inducements is not good for society.

This creates disturbance among family members, relatives and society at large,” he added.

Bommai said there is no opportunity for forcible conversion through inducements, but all religious communities including Christians should not be anxious. They have all the rights under the Constitution to practice and propagate their religions, he said.

The proposed anti-conversion bill is being vetted by the legal department of the government and will be placed for discussion in the cabinet meeting to be held in Belagavi, he said. After getting approval in the cabinet, the draft bill will be introduced in the Belagavi assembly session, he added.

“The scrutiny committee of the Law Department is preparing the draft bill, which will be placed before the cabinet. The cabinet will take a call and introduce it in the winter session of the Assembly,” he said.
