BENGALURU:
To accommodate the increasing traffic at Belagavi Airport in Karnataka, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has commissioned a category-I instrument landing system (ILS) for its runway on Thursday. According to the AAI, the total cost for installing the facility is Rs 12.38 Cr.
The installation of the ILS on runway 26 approach of Belagavi Airport will allow aircraft to land in low visibility and at night, the authority added. An Instrument Landing System (ILS) is a precise radio navigation system that provides short-range guidance to aircraft, enabling them to approach a runway in adverse weather conditions.

The new facility features a 16-element Localizer antenna system that will aid in the precise approach of all aircraft landing at Belagavi airport, regardless of weather conditions. The Instrument Landing System utilizes two radio beams to provide pilots with vertical and horizontal guidance during the landing approach. The localizer (LOC) provides azimuth guidance, while the glidepath (GP) defines the correct vertical descent profile. This system is particularly beneficial for pilots at airports like Belagavi.
The trial run of the installed ILS was successfully completed by an Indigo Airlines A320 flight bound for Hyderabad on July 31 of this year.
