National Anthem Neglect Sparks Legal Row: High Court Issues Notice to Devanahalli School After Students File Petition

The Karnataka High Court has handed down a six-month jail sentence to a young man for causing the death of a pedestrian due to reckless driving.
Justice Venkatesh Naik T dismissed the revision petition filed by Hanumantarayappa, who was 21 years old at the time of the crime. Citing the Supreme Court, the High Court judges sentenced the convict to a minimum of six months imprisonment under Section 304-A of the IPC. The court emphasized that the rise in accidents is attributed to individuals driving without a license and insurance, as well as engaging in rash and negligent driving.

When the accused Hanumantarayappa sought to have the sentence overturned, the prosecution objected, arguing that the mishap occurred because he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident. It was contended that Hanumantarayappa, while riding a two-wheeler, negligently collided with a pedestrian, resulting in the unfortunate demise.
The trial court had previously found Hanumantarayappa guilty under IPC Sections 279 and 304-A, sentencing him to six months of rigorous imprisonment and imposing a fine of Rs. 5,000.
After carefully examining the testimony of the witnesses, the High Court upheld that the accident was caused by Hanumantarayappa’s excessive speed and negligent driving.
