BENGALURU:

Citizen participation programmes play an important role in keeping the city clean. In a decentralised system, zonal/constituency/ward level coordinators and Shuchi Mitras at the block level and volunteers at the lane level have to work towards this objective, said BBMP Chief Commissioner Gaurav Gupta on Wednesday.

He was speaking after launching the BBMP-recognized Citizen Participation Programme at Puttanna Chetti Purabhavana. Even as junior observers and marshals are keeping an eye on garbage disposal, citizens too must proactively join hands with BBMP in the endeavour, Gupta said. A new organisation for solid waste management has been set up, which will supplement the work of the civic agency, he noted.

‘Landfills pollute’

Justice Subhash B Adi, Chairman, NGT State Level Monitoring Committee for Solid Waste Management, Karnataka, said that in accordance with the motto, ‘Our waste is our responsibility’, elected representatives, BBMP officials and citizens must join hands to make the city cleaner.
