No flight services from KIA were affected despite five hours of rain
Videos on social media show passengers being ferried in tractors to Bengaluru airport
BENGALURU:
Monday evening’s heavy rains not only lashed the city but left Bengaluru International Airport’s surroundings flooded. The airport reported a huge precipitation of 178.3 mm ( nearly 18 cm) of rain.
Late-night video clips shot on mobile phones were widely circulated, showing passengers being ferried in tractors to the airport.
Meanwhile, the airport’s front portion was flooded, leaving passengers who landed at the airport stranded, with no clue on where to go and forced to stay back at the airport.
More than expected rain
An officer attached to the India Meteorological Department said heavy rain had been expected in and around the International Airport but more than the expected rain was recorded.
“The rain started after 7 pm and it rained for more than 5 hours, leaving the parking area and surroundings of the terminal building waterlogged. The water receded within one hour after the rain stopped. The runway area was not affected as rainwater was getting drained out. No flight was affected due to the heavy rains,” an officer said.
